How do I calculate how much mulch or rock I need?

Typically you can measure the width and length of the area and multiply the two numbers, then multiply that total by the depth you want your mulch. Use this Mulch Calculator to estimate your need (works for both rock and mulch):

How to Make the Most of Your Landscaping

1. Make a Plan

Measure and then draw a sketch of the area you intend to landscape. Then write in or draw the plants (see Step 3 below) you intend to use. This will save time and money when you buy the materials for your project.

4. Buy Your Materials from Us

Our goal is to provide the best materials available at the most reasonable cost. We’ll work with you to the degree you want or need help to identify the right rock or mulch for your project.

2. Choose Complementary Materials

Use rock and/or mulch that complement each other in color, but that are different textures and sizes to create a three-dimensional look. Don’t forget your borders and edging, either! Whether you use plastic, wood, concrete or something else, edging will help keep your rocks and mulch in place, simplifying maintenance and making it easier to mow and/or trim around the area.

3. Minimize Weed Growth

Weeds will destroy your landscaping! To minimize growth of weeds and other undesirable plants, you’ll want to line the entire area with a high-quality landscape cloth before laying your landscaping materials. Don’t skimp on this important step, or you’ll be pulling weeds for years to come! This website offers some very helpful information.

3. Buy Complimentary Plants

The plants you choose should complement one another, working together to create a garden of different colors, heights and that reflects seasonal changes. For example, placing smaller plants in front and taller plants in back creates a tiered look that allows all plants to be visible. Similarly, take into account when certain plants bloom so you have colors throughout the growing season (since some plants bloom in spring, others in summer and others in fall). Sorry, but we can’t help you with winter! Martha Stewart offers some great tips here!

5. Work in Sections

Now that you have a plan and all your materials in hand, it’s time to start the hard, sweat-inducing work of installing everything. We’ve found that it’s best to break the project into sections so you spread the work out and create defined borders between any separated areas. This will give you a greater sense of progress and accomplishment as you complete each section, rather than doing it all at once and getting frustrated because of the time required to see progress.
